Fabric Friday {Fabrics for Under $10 Yard) + WIP

 Before saying goodbye for the weekend I thought I would share with you what's in progress.

FOR THE HOME:

• My custom window treatments for my kitchen are completed!  This was a good month long process getting the right design.  They should arrive at my door the first or second week of June.  SO excited.   If anyone asks what the heck these are, I'm not gonna dish until I install them.  :)  sorry!

 

• My rug for the kitchen is on backorder, and it should arrive the first week of June.  I haven't made any mention of ordering it, but here is a snapshot of the rug.

• Still debating what to do with the back of my kitchen island.   I have to wait until that baby above enters the room.  
• I painted my living room.  I LOVE it!  It is so bright and airy now.  I use to get depressed in my living room.  My living room is the next room to tackle once the kitchen and Owen's room is done.
• Speaking of Owen's room, I purchased fabric to slipcover his rocking chair.  I think I have been talking about his chair for a good 8 months now.    All I have left to do for his room is slipcover the rocker, sew a pillow, hang pictures, and do a few little odd end things.  And then my friends, I will be ready for the final reveal.  :)
• I reupholstered his ottoman.  I will share that with you at a later date.  I'm calling it the "ghettoman" because, quite frankly, it's ghetto.  It was my first reupholstering job.  You'd think the ottoman would be the easiest thing to reupholster.  It wasn't too bad, but I'll wait to get into the details later.  In final words let's just say it looks waaay better than it did before, which you can see here.

SEWING:

• Oh my word.  I am starting my second quilt, and I plan on listing it for sale.  It will be very BRIGHT and girly, hence why I am selling it.  I just loved the fabric too much, and I just HAD to have it!  This quilt will be much easier than my last one!  I'm doing hardly any cutting on this one, but I will be doing lots of top stitching.  After that, I want to make blocks.  They look like so much fun!
• I am working on a few gifts for my nieces, but I can't really share pictures of that with you until they are done.
• I've completed my giveaway, which will start on Monday, but I am working on some new giveaways for later dates.  How much fun is that?!
• I'm making zippered pouches to help my friend out, and if you can sew, you should take the opportunity to serve.  :)  You can read more about that here.

 So I think it's safe to say that I have been one busy chica, but I haven't touched my craft room yet and Matt comes home tomorrow night.  Boy, he will be severely disappointed.  If only I could squeeze in a few more hours in a day.   I should clarify.  Kid-free hours.

slipcover progress

whoa. whoa. whoa.   this is all i can think of at the moment.  when i decided to slipcover owen's rocking chair for his room, i knew i was up for a challenge, but whoa.  i took my chair and 7 yards of duck cloth fabric over to a friend's house, who has slipcovered several chairs now.  she helped me with the inside of the chair and the arms, which is supposedly the hardest part of slipcovering.  i hope she's right.  my friend and i spent over 6 hours making the back, insides, and arms!  after 6+ hours of work, i felt kind of bad that it was taking so long, so i decided i would take the chair home with me and finish it there.  i know slipcovers are not perfect, and i am okay with that.  but holy numb nuts.  this is hard work, and for such an okay outcome???  i can't wait to see the final product though (but honestly, i think i will be more happy just to be done with it).  my friend was SO awesome in helping me with this project.  there is no way i could have done any of this without her help.  she has shown me the basics, which i will use to finish up the chair.

so i ask this one question, which may not be a fair question because i am not done with my chair.

how do people make their slipcovers look so good?

and now that your eyes have seen such a wonderful sight, i will now show you my least appealing photos of my chair.  ha!

*my room is freshly painted (woo-hoo!), but i haven't put anything back up on the walls.  :(

i can't wait to see the final product.  this chair will not have ruffles or pleats since that is a little too feminine for a boys room.  my ideal chair would look like the one in the last photo.  i can't wait to get this baby done!

if you have slipcovered before, do you know how to get rid of those gathers at the arm?????  i pin it straight, but it comes out of my machine bunched up.  yikes.


and lastly, how 'bout i let you drool over the dinner i cooked last night.

 First off, let me say thank you for all the sweet comments so far on Owen's room.  I really appreciate them!  Second, I need to go ahead and let you know that I am artistic and creative, if you don't know that already.  If it weren't for those two things, I am not sure if I could have pulled off his room as cheaply as I did.  It took me several months to plan.  I say plan but I really didn't plan out the design.  No mood board.  No drawings.  No lists.  And if you are saying I am rock star for being able to pull that room off without a plan, I'd tell you there's a whole lot more to it than meets the eye.   I sat on that room for a few months because I didn't have a plan, and I made a few mistakes along the way, all of which could have been avoided.  I was also very wishy washy.   All I knew was that I wanted to keep my blue chevron curtains in the room, have a rocker, and use orange accents.  Well, the latter didn't happened.  It wasn't until a few weeks ago that I had a surge of creativity.  This is usually how my creativity works, so I am use to it by now and take advantage of it when it does strike.  I usually drop everything I am doing to make my thoughts into reality.  I just wish it were more steady.  :)  I wish I had taken a picture of the room during its progress to show you the dormant state it was in for months.   Another reason my surges of creativity is actually a flaw.  I don't think.  I just do. 

Updates + Fabric Friday {Parson Gray}

If you follow my blog regularly, you're probably wondering what I have been up to. I thought I would include a little recap of my current projects since I was away last week and my main post for this week was my pallet wall.

- Bought wood and supplies to turn my dresser into a kitchen island.  I will be taking you through this journey step by step.

- Started the pattern to slipcover Owen's rocking chair.  I will also share this with you as best as I can.

- Working on my first blog button.  Yikes!  Quite intimidating. 

- Halfway done with the top piece of my quilt. I didn't get to work on it last week as much as I had hoped.

- Project that I started and needed a break away from

This pattern is by far the most ambiguous one I have ever read.  I got really stumped with the ruffle part, so I will make my own ruffle.  The pattern is from Wal-Mart, and I will never recommend it to any beginner sewer.  I wouldn't consider myself a beginner, yet I had to do a lot of unpicking on this dress!  I will get back to this dress as soon as I can look at it without getting mad.  grrrrr.  :)

-Project for the weekend:  Attending my local flea market on Sat. hoping to find some unique (cheap) items for the home.   I haven't attended in a least a year, and it's only open on the weekends. 

Okay, so onto Fabric Friday!  Have you heard of Parson Gray aka David Butler???  Okay, I'm a fan of Amy Butler, but I had no clue her husband designs too!  I'm a bit late in the game knowing this, but that's okay.  I'm happy to know about it now.   He offers sewing, home decor, and laminated fabric just like Amy.  Sometimes, I find it difficult to find fabrics that are suited for men, but I think this collection is a definite winner.  I could see both sexes using most of these prints.

HOME DECOR

My Living Room

Redoing my living room is one of my "home" goals for the year.  I should preface by saying there really is nothing wrong with my living room.  It is comfortable and can seat guests.  It's just a lot of brown.  A LOT of brown.  So that makes me depressed, and I am sure it depresses our guests.

My living room has had many "before" experiences since the 5 years we have been living in our home, but this photo is where it was at most recently.  I realized this room really wasn't me.  I think I was decorating to how I thought it should be.  Now I want my space to reflect me.  My style is definitely transitional; something I was really hesitant saying for awhile now because I love modern wayyyy more than traditional.  But nowadays, I am accepting that I do like some traditional things in my home, even if my cool self wants to deny it.

I just cringed a little.  Just so you know.

Here's my to do/wish list:

• Since replacing furniture is probably something the husband won't be on board with (not very economical either), I *might* slipcover either my couch or two chairs in a crisp white canvas fabric  (machine washable, of course!)  <----This will probably be just a wish considering my last encounter with slipcovering.  If I had thousands of dollars, I would sell my furniture and buy a grey sofa from West Elm or Crate and Barrel and have some funky leather or upholstered chairs from Dwell Studio or Jonathan Adler.  I love dreaming, don't you?  :)
• Replace rug
• Curtains
• Pillows
• Transform existing coffee table into something else (get rid of glass!!!)
• Hang art
• Hang light by couch
• Paint mirror
• Possibly build a small shelf directly behind and level with the couch

And this is where I am at right now.  Sorry for such bad photos!!!

As you can see, I've got some work to do.  :)

*The kitchen is almost done, so you haven't missed out on that yet.  There's been more waiting than doing on our part, so technically, it should not have taken a year to remodel it.  Sorry about that!
