screw it || home

i said screw it.  i wanted a large chalkboard wall from the get go, and against my husband's wishes, i painted a large chalkboard wall.

we just got back from CA, and our neighbors came over for a quick visit.  after watching four kids try to draw on my existing chalk wall, i decided it was time.

without thinking of any repercussions, i started painting.  fortunately, it's just paint.  something i am not scared of.

so here is the wall before i slathered yummy black paint on it.

okay, i know what some of you are thinking.  holy freaking nut balls that is dark/clashes/insert thought here.

baby steps, okay?

i know my living room does not match this, but it's all a process and progress.  wait until i show you the ultimate clash fest photo.  don't worry.  it's coming up soon.

*the chalk bag was made by me using film in the fridge's tutorial // high chair thrifted*

"conditioning" the wall.

and if this chalkboard wall doesn't work out, i just paint it to match my living room wall color, which will soon be white.

i am not rushing into painting my chevron wall just yet.  i will definitely paint my living room walls first, but i need some time to live with my chalkboard wall.  i painted those chevrons when i was 41 weeks pregnant, and i just love that wall so much!  but one of them will definitely go in the end.  either the chevrons or the chalkboard wall.

so there's something you should know about me.  i don't really plan too much when it comes to decorating.  i just go and do it.  if it fails, oh well.  i have to start over.  i'm the type of person that if i have an idea i will do it almost immediately without thinking much about the pros or cons.  it's an awful characteristic of mine.  trust me.  but sometimes it can be a blessing because if i were the type who had to methodically think out everything and create a mood board, i may not take as many risks.  and then there are those times where i can't force a single design idea out of my brain.  and i wait.  and wait.

what's interesting about decorating, in my opinion, is it's an opportunity to discover yourself a little more in a way that's not conventional.

so . . . are you fan of chalkboard paint?  it's freaking amazing, and i think it should be in every parent's home.  just don't go painting a wall that touches carpet, m'kay?

here's why i love chalkboard paint.

1. it's a great black color.
2. it has a nice finish on it.  somewhere between matte and eggshell?
3. you can lighten it up by wiping white chalk on it, or you can leave it dark by cleaning it with a wet cloth.
4. you can draw on it.
5. kids love chalk, and they love to draw on walls.
6. it makes a great killer back drop for future photos.

this is why carpet is a no go.  apparently, i have issues wiping a floor properly.  :/

sometimes, you just have to say screw it, and take a design risk.  paint is probably the easiest thing a DIYer can fix.

have a good weekend y'all!!

peaceout

  1. Maybe I would think differently if I was actually in your home but from the pics, it doesn't look like it clashes at all! I love this idea - I want to go paint a chalkboard wall in my house now. And I really like how you just go for it.

  2. I so want to do a chalkboard wall in our house, but it's one of those "I wants" and not "needs" so it waits. It's not the cost, but the time. We have sooo much stuff that needs fixing, I feel guilty spending time and effort on the frivolous stuff.

    1. I know what you mean. It works out great for us since owen LOVES the old chalkboard wall. One day Jess, right?!

  3. I love it! I was just trying to talk my husband into doing a chalkboard wall in our breakfast area last night! Unfortunately we have textured walls and since I'm not loving the idea of sanding the whole dang thing smooth, I think it is a no go. But I absolutely love yours and I love it next to the chevrons and please don't paint your living room white!! You would lose the impact of your crown molding which is so nice.

    1. Oh bummer! Textured walls are no fun for when you want to anything creative with paint.

  4. I think everything goes with chalkboard wall :). Also, as soon as you said backdrop for pictures, I started kicking myself for doing our chalkboard wall in a little nook in the kitchen that gets no natural light. Doh!

  5. I actually really like it right up by the chevron wall. I think it's awesome. But maybe once you have made progress on other things you'll change your mind, but I would be happy with it for a while, I think.

    1. Thanks Ashley! Yeah, my plan is to let it sit while I work on the rest of the living area like the dining room and living room. It faces both areas. But I still like it! :)

  6. Looks awesome - and it doesn't look like it clashes AT ALL! I think especially once you "conditioned" the wall, the color acts as a neutral and totally coordinates with the space. Way to just GO or it

    1. Thank you! Conditioning it really helped to tone it down a notch.

  7. I love it! It looks dramatic and doesn't seem to clash with anything - that I can see from your photos. I haven't tried to do a wall but am working on sewing jars, etc., and have worked with chalk cloth many times. Good work, though.

  9. I love your chalkboard wall. And I KNOW my daughter would too. She is going on 14, but still has a thing for writing on the wall. We have an unused sheet of drywall that has been leaning in a hall for years. Over the years, she has made it a piece of art! Just tell your husband that your chalkboard wall looks much nicer than a spare sheet of sheet rock leaning in a hall. Simple.

Simply fabulous! I wouldn't change a thing..except maybe make some throw pillows of chevron, geometics and maybe black. Anyway, life is far too short to be boring!

  12. Okay so I love everything about this. The striking-black-turned-chalky-gray included ;) (I am also the opposite of you - I dwell over what to do forever and then keep changing my mind before committing to any one thing, ha!)

  13. I vote to keep the chalk wall ... just add some black and white chevron pillows to your lounge chairs :)

  14. Nancy -- I love it and if I had children I would totally do this in my house. I also love the chevrons and am wondering why you can't keep both? great job and you are defiantly more than welcome to come decorate my house any time.

    1. Thanks Katie! The chevrons are actually to warm against my cool colored walls. If you were in the space, it's totally obvious the three (black, chevron, and gray) do not go together, but my camera had a hard time capturing that! But I'm leaving that wall up for last to make sure I make the right decision.

I'll take you up on your offer anytime! :)

  17. Stumbled on your blog on a thread search. I made curtains (and a lot of other things)when i was about 400 months pregnant with a boy who is now 16. I finally had to pull the curtains down this summer, but it pained me, as i remembered how... interesting working around (and on top of) the additional me was. I joke that i made children on my sewing machine, but what i made while i was making the children is really very dear to me.
