Wonky Star Block || Tutorial

I'm using wonky stars for an upcoming sewing project, so I thought it would be nice to get the tutorial out before publishing the project.

Don't let this shape fool you.  It is SO easy to make this star.  For real.  Trust me on this.

For a completed 12" block, you will need the following:

(5)  4.5" squares** for your star  ( If using a directional print like stripes, please keep that in mind when cutting and placing your pieces together.  Of course, there are no rules, and you can do whatever you like.)
** 4 1/2" squares is an enough amount to allow you to get a perfect half-square triangle.  If you are making smaller points, you will not need as much fabric.  To reduce waste, please refer to Step 2 for learning how to fold the fabric over to help eyeball the amount needed for the particular angle you would like.  Cut the size squares accordingly.

(8)  4.5" squares for your background

Rotary cutter, ruler, and mat

Hot iron

WONKY STAR TUTORIAL

1.  Take (4) of your star squares and cut them in half on the diagonal.

2.  Place one piece, right sides together, onto one background square.   Because this is wonky, correct placement and accuracy is not all that important, BUT you need to make sure that when the fabric is folded over the seam goes past the background fabric a little.

 I use my finger to do a quick check.

Sew that piece down using a 1/4" seam.   Trim away the excess leaving your 1/4" seam allowance.  Fold over and press with a iron.

Take a second piece of star fabric and place it on the other side of the background square.  Repeat above.  Do this for a total of (4) pieces.

Trim your completed block to 4.5" square.

3.  After you have all the pieces done, place them in the order below.  Arrange pieces around to your liking.  Sew the squares together using a 1/4" seam allowance. Press the seams open.

4.  Align your seams, and sew the 3 rows together, one row at a time.  Press the seams open.

Pretty easy, eh?

  2. I am not a quilter, but I am thinking about attempting a baby quilt here soon. AND we are doing a bit of a star theme in the nursery... not a full on theme or anything. Just some stars on the ceiling and possibly on a rug. How fun would this be? I love the the fact that it's off-kilter. That's my kind of quilt block.
