Painted Faux Ombre Chevron Curtains

* You can see my newly updated room here.

I sat on this idea for awhile before I implemented it.  It's a running joke in my family that I was born in the wrong decade. :)  I tend to have good ideas, but majority of the time they are already implemented by someone else.  I was not surprised to have found that my "original" idea had already been photographed in a national magazine, on popular furniture website, performed by a popular blogger(s), and found among numerous link parties.  I was bummed, but I am use to it.  I knew chevrons are really hot among the blogging community right now, which is cool.  I love chevrons.  I mean I painted my walls in a chevron print and now on a set of curtains.  Heck, I even used the pattern on my snack bags.
(And I just realized right now that I may be coming across as a chevron freak.)

So this is how my faux ombre chevron curtains came about.

This is the magazine that graced my presence while thinking about painting curtains.  I didn't think curtains could be painted.  I thought I was going to take a risk and wing it, but a Better Homes & Garden Special Interest Publications confirmed that it could be done.

That's the #1 Dang it.

{Super cute!}

Once I knew that I could paint the curtains, I went with latex paint.   Latex paint is cheap, and there are tons of colors.  I picked out 4 colors from Lowe's and got them in sample cans. About a month or so later,  I was browsing the internet, and I came across this tutorial.

That's the #2 Dang it.

On the flip side, I was happy to read her tutorial because my first and only attempt was the right attempt, so I didn't waste any time or money.  By the time I read that tutorial, I had already completed my first panel.  Trust me though, I can totally relate to Kristen because I have had many projects go sour.

Halfway done with my curtains with one sore back (I worked on a coffee table), I was browsing the web (again) for cute rugs for my kitchen.   I came across this on Pinterest.

Yep, that's an ombre chevron duvet.  #3 Dang it.

I guess I do have something going in my favor.   Ombre chevron curtains.

Next on my list.  A valance for this sucker.

You can now see my full tutorial at Remodelaholic and read a post at Apartment Therapy.
I heart you both.

xx  nancy

The curtains are awesome! I'm wondering what fabric/curtain panels you used? They have a nice sheen which totally glams up the whole project. :-)

  11. Thank you everyone!!

@ As Is~ I used Hancock's Tiffany Drapes. They are my favorite! (I have a some in my bedroom too, but in a different color.) They have a nice backing, so it helps block out light. Plus, they are substantial curtains for the price. If you use a coupon, you can get the curtains for around $21-$23 a panel, which is great compared to some mass retailers out there. Are you going to the High Point Market in Oct.?

  12. This post is so funny! Literally within the past two weeks I have been gathering images to post themed collections...only to have those same themed collections posted by big and famous blogs. I just can't seem to get to the front of the line! Love the curtains! Included them on my Pinterest chevron board.

I love how your curtains turned out! Mixing the chevron and the ombre which are both popular trends, make this project super awesome. Great job!

  43. Oh, I just saw these on Judy's blog DIY design and had to come over and tell you how perfect those curtains are. They are unique and yeah maybe not an original idea, but your choice of colors and the perfection of the chevron makes them look like a million bucks! Stunning they are! I am going to pin them on my Pinterest for everyone to see!

  44. @ Remodelholic ~ I would be honored! Thank you!

@ Stephanie ~ Thank you so much! I am a detailed-oriented person (well, for most things :), so I tried really hard to make them look good! The curtain panels also have a sheen to them, which I love. You can find them at Hancock's. Thank you for pinning it!!

I pinned this - they are gorgeous...they may have some popular elements (ombre and chevron) but I haven't seen anything remotely similar to your curtains. I love the colors and the sheen of the fabric/paint. you did an amazing job and they turned out beautifully! Thanks for sharing.

  48. Fabulous curtains!
I'm in the middle of fixing up an entire foreclosure house, so I've been in color-picking-insanity over here with all the colors that go in each room.
I would love to know the 4 colors you used. It would be nice to know an ombré color combo that already goes together just incase :)
Thanks so much for the inspiration!

    ReplyDelete
  49. Hi Unknown! Here are my color choices, but I do not have the lightest one since it was not printed on my sample can. I am sure you can find something that goes well with the other colors.
Lowe's Valspar in Satin Base 2 Antique Blue
    " " Base 1 Paradise Blue
    Olympic Base 2 Satin Rendezvous

Maybe I can help you with your "color-picking-insanity" :) and tell you the BEST thing you can do for your home is to keep the colors neutral and cohesive. This doesn't mean you have to use painter's beige for the entire house, or even at all for that matter. You can add pops of color throughout your home, but for reselling, it can be overwhelming for the buyer (and seller :) if you designate colors to particular rooms. For instance, I would not recommend having a green kitchen, blue living room, red bathroom, yellow bedroom, etc. Does that make sense? I apologize if I am spitting out info you already know. :)

I hope those colors are helpful. Best of luck!!!

  60. Beautiful! I just did my first painting-on-fabric project. I used leftover fabric from shortening these curtains: http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/80173916/, and painted over & filled in the wiggly stripe pattern with gray paint. Then I used it to recover a chair cushion. It looks great, but the latex paint definitely makes the fabric stiff in the painted areas. I'm considering painting curtains too - are your painted stripes stiff from the paint? They still look so soft and flowy in the pictures. I've read some posts from people who add fabric medium to the paint. What are your thoughts?

    ReplyDelete
  61. Thanks Jessi! My curtains are not stiff, but I am not sure why that is. I did not use a fabric medium, though I have read many people like to add that to their paint. My paint was latex, and I applied 1-2 coats. My polyester curtains are thicker than standard curtains too. They block out the sun.

I have a set of brown curtains that are exactly like the ones in this room. I plan on painting them entirely in latex. I plan on sharing that experience in the future, but it won't be anytime soon. Maybe in a month or two? I'm curious to know how the curtains will react to being completely covered in latex paint.

The curtains in this room have a great drape and are still pliable. Not crunchy or hard. Hope that helps!

    Hi there,
I only just found this post and I adore those curtains (I should say ADORE them), I'd love to do something similar in my family room, however I have three pets (who like to look out the windows and grubby up the curtains) so I was wondering if these painted curtains would be washable? I guess it pays to be so behind the game because maybe you've tried it?
I don't wash my curtains often, but it would be nice to know if I'd be washing all my hard work away if I did!
    Thanks so much!

    1. Thanks! I have not washed mine, and they have held up well with my son. You could add a medium to the paint to make it washable, but I would test it first before diving into the project.

Thanks Nancy...now for another 'newbie' question...what kind of fabric medium should I use? Do you have a favourite brand/type?
